Early Life

Actor Johnny Depp was born John Christopher Depp II, in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963, to parents John and Betty Sue Depp. Depp's father worked as a civil engineer and his mother worked as a waitress and homemaker. The youngest of four children, Depp was withdrawn and a self-admitted oddball. "I made odd noises as a child," he later revealed in an interview. "Just did weird things, like turn off light switches twice. I think my parents thought I had Tourette's syndrome."
Johnny and his family moved frequently to accommodate his father's job, finally landing in Miramar, Florida, when Johnny was 7 years old. The family lived in a motel for nearly a year, until his father found a job. Depp hated his new home and, by the age of 12 began smoking, experimenting with drugs, and engaging in self-harm due to the stress of family problems. "Puberty was very vague," he has said. "I literally locked myself in a room and played guitar."
In 1978, when Depp was 15, his parents got divorced. As the youngest of four, it became Johnny's job to go to his father's office and pick up the weekly child-support money. The split caused a rift between Johnny and his father.
At 16, Depp dropped out of high school and joined a garage band called the Kids. The group became successful enough to open for the Talking Heads and the B-52s, but they barely made ends meet. Depp lived for months in a friend's '67 Chevy Impala.

Introduction to Acting and '21 Jump Street'

In 1983, at the age of 20, Johnny met and married 25-year-old makeup artist Lori Allison. That same year, the couple moved to L.A. with Depp's band in the hopes of striking it big. Still living on a shoestring budget, Depp and his bandmates supported themselves by selling pens for a telemarketing firm.
A year later, Depp fell into acting when his wife introduced him to her ex-boyfriend, actor Nicolas Cage. Cage saw potential in Depp, and introduced the hopeful musician to a Hollywood agent. After several small roles as an extra, Depp landed his first legitimate movie role in the horror film Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).
By 1985, the Kids had broken up—and so had Depp's marriage. After his split with Allison, Depp struck up a relationship with actress Sherilyn Fenn, whom he met on the set of the short film Dummies (1985). They were briefly engaged, but split shortly after. After their break-up, Depp then met and proposed to actress Jennifer Grey; their romance was also short-lived.
Depp started to study acting in earnest, first in classes at the Loft Studio in Los Angeles and then with a private coach. The lessons paid off in 1987, when he replaced actor Jeff Yagher in the role of undercover cop Tommy Hanson in the popular Canadian-filmed television series 21 Jump Street. The role thrust Depp into almost immediate stardom; he became a teen idol overnight, though he resented that label. When his contract on Jump Street expired in 1989, he leapt at the opportunity to pursue weightier roles.

Career
  • Johnny Depp's first acting role was as a boyfriend of the lead character, Nancy, in 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' in 1984. While Depp's character met an early demise, his acting career continued to thrive as he earned a small role in Oliver Stone's 'Platoon', playing a Vietnamese-speaking private.
  • In early 1987, he made his television debut in what would become his breakthrough role as Tom Hanson, an undercover cop posing as a high school student on the hit television series '21 Jump Street'.
  • His next movie role was in 'Cry Baby' in 1990. While not a big hit at the box office, the campy movie has since become a cult classic. Later that year, he starred as the title character in 'Edward Scissorhands', the first of many collaborations with director Tim Burton.
  • Depp followed up the success of 'Edward Scissorhands' with 'Benny & Joon' and 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' in 1993, both considered sleeper hits. He displayed his diversity as an actor in 'Arizona Dream', also released in the same year.
  • Proving that he’s more interested in the characters he plays rather than box office potential, the skilled actor teamed with Burton to play the title role in 'Ed Wood,' a 1994 tribute to the notoriously inept director.
  • In 1995, he showed his versatility by starring in 'Don Juan DeMarco', wherein he portrayed an eccentric man who believes himself to be the great lover; 'Dead Man', a western filmed in black and white, and 'Nick of Time', a dark drama about an accountant who must knock off a politician in order to save his kidnapped daughter.
  • The fictionalized story of an FBI agent who infiltrates the mob became Depp's next movie role in 1997 when he teamed with Al Pacino in 'Donnie Brasco.
  • In 2004, Depp and his sister, Christi Dembrowski, put together a production company called ‘Infinitum Nihil’. The first film produced by the company was 'The Rum Diary,' a film adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel of the same name.
  • In 2005, he became Willy Wonka in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', a darker version of the classic tale by Roald Dahl. That same year, he provided the voice of Victor Van Dort in Tim Burton's 'Corpse Bride'.
  • He returned to his Captain Jack Sparrow role in 2006 and 2007 in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End,' respectively.
  • He wrapped up 2007 with a darker role as the title character in the film adaptation of 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,' another collaboration with Burton.
  • He became notorious gangster John Dillinger in 'Public Enemies' in 2009. This was followed by 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,' where Depp was among a handful of actors selected to fill in for Heath Ledger's character since the actor had died during filming.
  • In 2010, he became the Mad Hatter in Burton's version of 'Alice in Wonderland.' He followed this up with a role in 'The Tourist' and served as the voice of the title character in 'Rango'.
  • 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' marked his return as Captain Sparrow in 2011. This was followed by roles in 'The Rum Diary' and 'Jack and Jill,' in which he made an uncredited cameo as himself.
  • He made another uncredited cameo in the 2012 film version of his iconic TV show '21 Jump Street,' playing an agent. He once again team with Burton to assume the role of Barnabas Collins in the big screen version of 'Dark Shadows' the same year.
  • The following year, he was Tonto in 'The Lone Ranger' opposite Armie Hammer. Also in 2013, he made a cameo appearance in 'Lucky Them' before moving on to his role as Dr. Will Caster in science fiction movie 'Transcendence'.
  • After being cast in ‘Transcendence’ the talented actor was credited as Guy Lapointe when he appeared in 'Tusk', in 2014 before debuting as the wolf in 'Into the Woods' later that year.
  • In early 2015, Depp starred with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor as an eccentric art dealer in 'Mortdecai'. His subsequent roles in 2015 and beyond include roles in 'Black Mass,' 'London Fields' and 'Yoga Hosers.'
  • Depp reprises his role as the Mad Hatter in 'Alice Through the Looking Glass', set for a 2016 release.
  • He'll suit up again as Captain Jack Sparrow in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales', set to hit theaters in 2017.
  • He has continued to pursue his musical interests, collaborating with artists such as Shane MacGowan and Oasis. He is also a member of the band ‘P’, which also includes ‘Flea’ of the ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers’.

15CAN'T AFFORD: PRIVATE JET

via Fanpop
When Depp found himself in financial trouble, he resorted to selling his cars, houses, art, and books. One of the possessions that Depp refused to part ways with was his private jet. He stated that the fight with the paparazzi on a commercial plane would cause him a tremendous amount of stress, which he could not handle.
Since Depp is cash strapped, he might need to downgrade to commercial flights. He might have to deal with the paparazzi while flying, but that's better than filing for broke. Some Hollywood actors aren't aware that they live in a parallel universe.

14CAN'T AFFORD: VAJOLIROJA YACHT

via Galaxy Yacht
Wanting to honor his girlfriend at the time, Depp named his yacht Vajoliroja by combining his girlfriend's name Vanessa Paradis, his name, as well as his children. When he married Amber Heard, he changed the name to Amphitrite to honor her. Author J.K. Rowling bought the yacht from Depp and sold it a year later for $10 million less than she bought it.
Although Rowling is a billionaire, it seems that even she thought the yacht was too expensive to maintain. If it's too expensive for a billionaire, then Depp can't afford it.

13CAN'T AFFORD: CHEVROLET NOVA

via Yahoo News Singapore
Most of the cars that Depp owned are classics. One of those cars was the Chevrolet Nova. Chevrolet produced the car through five generations. The automaker built the Nova on the X-body platform and as a replacement for the 1980 Chevrolet Citation. The Nova had a beautiful exterior, but the car had more than good looks. Under the bonnet was a powerful V8 engine that could propel the car to high speeds and pump out 295 horsepower.
Although the early models are several decades old, the car looks stunning. Some of the well restored Novas fetched $300,000 at auctions.

According to Car and Driver, the car provides 12 mpg in the city and 19 mph on the highway. The starting price for the car is $317,000. Depp should be saving all the money that he has left and not spend a dime on an expensive car such as the Wraith.

9CAN'T AFFORD: FERRARI 488

via Autogespot
Cars such as Ferrari are reserved for millionaires. Although Depp could afford it several years ago, he would struggle to maintain the gas and maintenance bill. The manufacturer has produced the car since 2015 and fitted a 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, capable of pumping out 661 horsepower. Top Gear magazine named the 488 GTB The Supercar of the Year 2015. Moto Trend announced that the 488 GTB was its Best Driver's Car for 2017.
The 488 offers incredible performance and dashing looks, but the price tag of $301,000 is for drivers with deep pockets.

Consumers who want to own a base model should be prepared to part with $75,000 but could pay as much as $100,000 for a Platinum trim. The car has a 5.3-liter V8 engine, capable of pumping out 295 horsepower.

5CAN AFFORD: 1951 FORD MERCURY

via Killer Paint
Depp enjoys classic cars, and one of the cars that he owned while starring in 21 Jump Street was the 1951 Ford Mercury. The car was broad and needed major TLC after sitting in storage for several years, according to Bodie Stroud. The floorboard needed to be replaced.
The car received a new Ride Tech air-ride suspension and shocks, as well as a Ford Crate motor, a 5-liter that was capable of pumping out 300 horsepower. The C6 automatic transmission provided the torque to the wheels. The transmission had clutch plates instead of bands on the low and reverse gears.

4CAN AFFORD: AUSTIN ALLEGRO

via Wikipedia
Although the Daily Mail reported that the Allegro was voted Britain's worst car, Depp has a high opinion of it. According to Viz, Depp said, "The Allegro is the girl for me. When I'm not in my pirate fancy dress costume, I like to pop down to my local Lidl with her. The heater is stuck on hot, so I have to drive with the windows open. The handbrake is $@!%, and the garage wanted forty grand to fix it, so when I park up, I have to leave it in gear."
While some might think that the Allegro is bad, others perceive it as a treasure. Although Depp had millions of dollars, he wasn't proud to get inside a jalopy.

3CAN AFFORD: DODGE CHALLENGER

via Auto Evolution
While many muscle car enthusiasts might believe that the Mustang is one of the best muscle cars produced, the Dodge Challenger serves as good competition. The car has been in production since 1958 through three generations, two of the generations as a pony car.
Dodge introduced the third generation as a pony car in 2008 and served as a rival to the Mustang and Camaro. The Challenger has an alluring exterior, but some drivers have stated that they had reliability issues with the vehicle. The car's performance and aesthetics are alluring, but reliability is an issue.

Although Consumer Reports has stated that the 500 L is unreliable, Fiat produced more than 2 million units by 2017.
